Waiting in a Washington hotel for the chance to speak into the lives of a few good men brought me to some meditative prayer, as well as usual concern that I not get in God's way. My cell phone rang and I considered not answering, knowing it could wait but also thinking that it may be my wife or kids. I answered the phone to the sound of the sweetest 70ish year old voice on earth, saying, "Scott, honey I have something very important I need to speak to you about." It was Mom. As she proceeded to tell me what was on her mind, I listened with half an ear like any good son would do while concentrating on something else. She did not know that I was out of town nor asked if I was involved with another person, no less a couple of thousand. She did not go through any of the polite formalities that another would have. She did not have to. It was Mom, and she needed to speak with her son. I ended the conversation telling my mom I loved her and thanked her for calling to remind me to set my clock forward, so I would not wake up late the next day. (She calls every year to let me know, thank God). After I hung up, the guy in me smiled at her simple view of life, not realizing that my heart was just encouraged by her passionate love for me, her son. With a softened heart, I decided to call my wife Debbie, to check on the kids and their day. I shared the excitement of my weekend and how God was moving. She moved the conversation to why our son Vincent's soccer team lost and how disappointed our other boy Nicky was over his canceled baseball game. She talked about our daughter Kimberly, and I again realized how blessed my children and I are to be surrounded by a woman whose passion is her kids and motherhood. In a country where so many children live without a biological father, God in His ultimate wisdom chose the mother to stand in the gap for her kids and if need be, their father, present or not. While speaking to men and hearing their hearts, I am embarrassed to say that very few have a passion for anything except hiding behind their fig leaf. (See guy named Adam in a garden). I wish I could tell you that passionate men of God are driving this nation, but that would not be true as women are stepping up to fill the gap left by fainthearted fathers. The word "Passion" has traveled throughout Christiandom these days in large part due to Mel Gibson's movie, "The Passion of the Christ". The emotions that surfaced during my first viewing were very difficult. Like many, feelings of anger turned to sorrow as my love for Jesus grew in each step, each lash and each time He got back up to take more for me. His passion and willingness to stand in between Satan and me was overwhelming. But there was another passion that has yet to be talked about. One that was sown throughout the whole movie. It was there each time Jesus rose to his feet after being beaten so badly. The lashes, the fall while carrying the cross and His final stand before Crucifixion. Each time the Mother's eyes met Heaven's Man, He received the power to move on. It was Mary's Passion. There is no denying that the love and suffering Mary went through had to go beyond the normal mother. The eternal plan of Salvation leaned on her son. Yet, Mary's maternal eye for her child was much like that of many mothers' today. Her heart broke more for her boy than for her God. A boy whose holy tears she used to dry while cleaning scraped knees. A boy whose blood from those knees would someday wash away our sins. The love that they shared was a Holy one, one that would someday be re-united in Heaven. Mary running to Jesus as He again fell with cross, accompanied by boyhood flashbacks with her was enough to bring not only mothers but all movie goers to the brink of despair. It was not only our Savior's pain we saw, but His earthly mother's. My mom modeled Mary's unconditional love by showing it to me in a way that maybe my father could not. A Mother brings this sacrificial heart to her kids, that makes God's love so much easier to understand. It's a passionate spiritual love! This passion of a mother is a building block in the making of a Godly man. A Man who receives this finds himself confidently moving towards larger goals while risking more for God and family. He is secure in his stance knowing that God will be there for him with all the passion and love his own mom had for him. Abraham Lincoln said, "No one is poor who has a Godly mother." With that said, many of us guys need to bless and thank our Mothers and wives this year as we celebrate their passion and the calling of motherhood. To my mom Margie, I thank you for giving me your passion and resolve while standing between me and the Devil as Mary did for her son. I thank my wife Debbie as I confess to not always seeing the blessing you are to our children. You are one passionate mom. You are the Virtuous Woman and a Woman to be praised. Proverbs 31:28-29 says it best: "Her children stand and call her blessed; so does her husband. He praises her with these words: There are many fine women in the world, but you are the best of them all!" Thanks Ladies! PS: By the way, I forgot to set my clock forward! Praise God for the Passion of a Mother.
